The GE / Panametrics Magna-Mike Model 8000 is an easy-to-use thickness gauge that utilizes a magnetic method (the Hall Effect technique) to make fast, accurate and repeatable measurements of nonferrous materials. Instant digital thickness measurements are made when its magnetic probe attracts a small target ball that is placed on the other side of the test material. This target ball can be simply dropped inside a bottle or container. A Hall Effect sensor built into the probe measures the distance between the probe tip and the target ball which is then displayed as an easy-to-read digital thickness. Measurements are made by holding or scanning the probe by hand, or by moving the test part while the probe is positioned in a benchtop holder.

With a target ball as small as 1/16" (1.59mm) diameter, the Magna-Mike is the ideal instrument to make accurate thickness measurements in critical areas such as tight corners or grooved areas. Other typical applications include center areas of large aluminum or plastic sheets where micrometers do not work, and glass containers, tubing, or thermoformed trays that are not practical for cutting up. The Magna-Mike's Standard Probe measures plastic, glass, rubber, composites, aluminum, titanium, and other nonferrous materials from 0 to 0.2500 inch (6.350mm) with a calibrated accuracy of +1%. An optional Extended Range Probe measures up to 0.3800" (9.650mm). A benefit of the Magna-Mike is that measurements generally do not depend upon the internal properties of the material.
