IET / General Radio 1607-A Transfer-Function and Immittance Bridge Overview
Features:
- Measurements From 25 to 1500 Megacycles
- Reduced Accuracy Above 1000 Megacycles
- Can Measure on Active and Passive Elements
With the Transfer-Function Indicator in place, the instrument will measure transadmittance, transimpedance, transfer current ratio, and transfer voltage ratio. It will also measure the direct (ungrounded) impedance or admittance of components by treating them as three-terminal networks.
With the Immittance Indicator in place, the instrument will measure the input or output impedance or admittance of four-terminal networks with the network terminated in either a short or open circuit. It will also measure the two-terminal (grounded) admittance or impedance of components and the reflection coefficient and VSWR of antennas and transmission lines.
The basic functional components of the 1607-A Transfer-Function and Immittance Bridge are: a junction block to which are connected standards and adjustable lines, an indicator assembly with coupling loops and balancing controls, and two adjustable, trombone-type coaxial lines.
The General Radio 1607-A Transfer-Function and Immittance Bridge may still be available for purchase and support from Artisan Technology Group beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

IET / General Radio 1607-A Transfer-Function and Immittance Bridge Description
Functions
Precise measurement of complex immittance parameters including impedance, admittance, transfer functions, and network characteristics across 20 Hz-20 kHz. Enables analysis of two-terminal passive components, three-terminal networks, and transformers. Features both internal and external generators, null detector capabilities, and balanced bridge measurement techniques. Provides direct readout of transfer gain/loss in decibels, phase angles, and complex impedance parameters. Supports laboratory testing, component evaluation, audio frequency measurements, and network analysis with accuracy typically within ±1%.
Platforms
Audio and RF frequency range impedance measurement bridge operating from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Designed for benchtop laboratory use with standard banana jack terminals for connection to external components under test. Features built-in oscillator and null detector with meter readout, manual balance controls for resistive and reactive components. Interfaces with external signal generators and detectors via front panel BNC connectors. Requires 115/230 VAC mains power. Compatible with standard test leads, kelvin clips, and component test fixtures. Used for precision measurement of inductance, capacitance, resistance, Q factor, dissipation factor, and complex impedance parameters in component characterization, filter design verification, and material property analysis applications.
Applications
The equipment performs precision measurements of complex impedance, admittance, and transfer functions across audio and radio frequency ranges using bridge balancing techniques. Operating on standard laboratory bench power with analog circuitry and precision components, it features adjustable reference standards, null detection systems, and calibrated dials for component value determination. The instrument interfaces through coaxial test ports, binding posts for external standards, and requires external oscillators and null detectors for complete operation. Applications include characterizing passive components like capacitors, inductors, and resistors, measuring filter responses, analyzing transformer parameters, and validating circuit models in electronic design and component testing laboratories.
Accessories
Requires external signal generator with BNC output connector. Test leads with banana plug connectors for DUT connections. BNC-to-banana adapters may be needed for certain measurements. External detector or null meter with appropriate input impedance. Coaxial cables with BNC male connectors. Standard resistors and capacitors for calibration verification. AC power cord with standard NEMA connector.
Interfaces
Four GR-874 sexless coaxial connectors (50-ohm) for Source, Detector, and two Unknown terminals (Hi/Lo), enabling 2- or 4-terminal impedance measurements. One standard AC power input (3-prong, NEMA 5-15R equivalent) for internal power. Two 4mm banana jack compatible binding posts for auxiliary ground or external DC bias.
Specifications
High-precision impedance measurement instrument operating from 20Hz to 20kHz, measuring resistance, capacitance, inductance, and dissipation factor with 0.1% accuracy. Features transformer-ratio-arm bridge topology with internal oscillator and null detector, front-panel binding posts for four-terminal connections, and BNC connectors for external generator/detector. Interfaces with external AC sources, oscilloscopes, or lock-in amplifiers for enhanced sensitivity. Employs precision decade transformers and reference standards with temperature compensation. Applications include component characterization, quality control testing, materials analysis, transducer calibration, and network analysis. Suitable for laboratory environments requiring precise complex impedance measurements of passive components, materials, and electrical networks.

Excellent company, employees, and service! Tim, Ann, and Todd are stellar to work with during transactions.
- Arvind P.
We have some test equipment in our lab from the 1990's that stopped working about 2 years ago. It sat in the corner collecting dust, but we took on a project last month that required more machines. After talking to Artisan, we found out we could get parts to fix our machine for much less than buying a new one!
