The GE Fanuc / Whedco SMD Series Stepping Motor Translators are bipolar chopper stepping motor drivers that convert pulse and direction signals from an external source into the corresponding current phase sequence required to drive four-phase stepping motors. The units are completely self-contained including a switching power supply, and incorporate all logic and power switching components needed for bidirectional control of the motor in either the full or half step mode.

By using a bipolar chopper type of drive, the translator maintains constant current over a large spectrum of operating conditions. This design allows the motor to operate at its peak performance over a wide speed range. It also promotes efficiency in power consumption and packaging by not requiring the use of current limiting resistors necessary with resistance-limitied (RL) type drives.

The Whedco SMD-3041-1-A Stepping Motor Translator may still be available for purchase and support from Artisan Technology Group beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).
