The Radstone StarSwitch StarFabric Switch/ Dual PMC Carrier Card operates as a 4-port switch to support a 3 or 5-slot P0-StarFabric point-to point backplane or chassis-to-chassis connection. P0-StarFabric offers much higher bandwidth than PCI solutions. The StarSwitch is primarily aimed at supporting Radstone's flagship G4DSP-XE StarFabric-enabled multiprocessor host.
StarFabric is currently the fastest datacomms technology available for use with the VME P0 connector standard. It has a signaling speed of 622 Mbits/s per signal pair, which equates to 2.5 Gbits/s per StarFabric port.
StarSwitch's four P0-StarFabric ports can be used as a pair of bundled links for small high performance systems, allowing a high sustained bandwidth to both PMC sites concurrently. Interrupts from the PMC sites are routed either via StarFabric or directly off-board for minimized latency using an interrupt mapper. StarSwitch's use of both switch and bridge functions allow traffic on any port to be routed to either PMC site, or switched (re-routed) off-board. Any number of StarSwitches can be used together with one or more StarFabric-enabled host to form large fabric networks.
StarSwitch additionally allows VME access to both PMC sites. The on-board bridges permit PCI-X-enabled PMCs to be used at 100 MHz and to isolate PMC traffic from each other. The combination of VME and StarFabric access to PMCs provides a means of separating low-latency control-plane data from bulk data transfers such as DMAs.
The STARSW-41 Radstone StarSwitch StarFabric Switch/ Dual PMC Carrier Card may still be available for purchase and support from Artisan Technology Group beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).
