The Alta Technology PMC/GNIC3 Gigabit Ethernet Network Interface Card is a high performance network interface card that is ideal for clustered or parallel systems. Designed for performance, inter-operability, and ease of use, the PMC/GNIC3 allows 10 times the bandwidth of Fast Ethernet and uses the new Gigabit controller 82543GC from Intel. The PMC/GNIC3 is compliant with the IEEE 802.3x full duplex and draft standard for Gigabit technology. The PMC/GNIC3 uses optical cabling which is highly reliable - even for long-range uses or in rugged environments.
The PMC/GNIC3 conforms to PMC standards and operates in both 64-bit and 32-bit bus machines at 33MHz and 66MHz. Host CPU off-loading optimizes efficiency. Frame buffers, RX and TX instructions pre-fetch, and transmit packet-chaining minimize host CPU utilization and reduces latency. Large external packet buffers maximize throughput by minimizing re-transmission during extended bursts. Intelligent interrupt algorithms reduce the number of host interrupts and latency. Data pipelining between the host and NIC in both RX and TX descriptor-based DMA processors stream data to and from the host memory without host intervention. Early receive interrupt allows packets to be processed based on host CPU availability.
